Can Bozo Help Solve Infertility?
Clowns. Some people think they're funny. Others have an actual fear of them. Personally, watching the Stephen King mini-series It totally messed up my opinion of clowns. I'm now a little creeped out by them. But how doctors originally linked clowns and fertility is beyond me.
Women undergoing treatment at a fertility clinic in Israel received a bedside
performance by professional clown Shlomi Algussi. The clown was dressed in a chef's hat and yellow and white vest as he told jokes, did magic tricks, and played the fool in front of patients. The result:The 93 women, who had been implanted with embryos, saw their pregnancy rates shoot up from 20% to 35%. Another 18 other women served as the control group.
How is this possible?Dr. Shevach Friedler, who came up with the idea, said: "We know that fertility patients are very stressed, and laughter could have an effect on the immune system." Dr. Friedler is also a trained mime artist.
"We know that fertility patients are very stressed, and laughter could have an effect on the immune system," Dr. Friedler explains. The researcers, who submitted their findings to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting, believe that humor can reduce the stress and anxiety of the IVF treatment, particularly after the embryo had been implanted in the woman’s womb.
So is it the humor that helps these women conceive? Or is Shlomi The Clown responsible? Look at a couple pics of some of these "miracle babies" and you be the judge:

OMG! The Phoenix strikes again. I'm laughing so hard, I'm almost crying.
Start 'splainin' Shlomi!
LOL
Clowns scare the living CRAP out of me.
I would prefer the exorcist girl spewing bile on me during implantation over a fucking clown act?1
Yick!
Clowns? Yikes!
That is just creeepy. Are you serious! Clowns scare the crap out of me, I always thought of John Wayne Gacy whenever I saw one.
The guy in the Chuckie Cheese's (aka Showbiz my child hood hang out) outfit, well, I just felt sorry for him.
Reading the movie "It" creeped me out to clowns.
I first freaked out with clowns because of the movie "Poltergeist"--that clown thing that smiled from the corner.
I'm a big scardy-cat.
dabich, I'm glad I could make you laugh! I was going to do a joke about Shlomi's shlong, but thought it was too tasteless.
NWG, Pea soup does seem less harmful.
jenna, maybe your next romantic story should involve a clown.
angel, Holy crap! I remember that clown on the chair, and when the boy turns to check on it, it's gone!
alice, Don't laugh...in college, I was the one inside the Chuck E. Cheese costume. I was violated daily.
Too, too funny! And very creepy. I have never liked clowns... all that face paint really freaks me out.
That is halarious...lol...those baby clowns are too cute!
hahaaa... I luv it!
IT sure made clowns c-r-e-e-p-y!
but....,
laughter IS the BEST MEDICINE!

Five words... Killer Klowns From Outer Space
*shudder*
Around 1970 there was a movie being made, I believe it was called Tears of a Clown Jerry Lewis was cast in the lead. He was playing a Nazi who dressed as a clown at concentration camps to try to get Jewish children to enter the gas chambers.
The movie was never finished, the plug was pulled long before it ever got that far.
But I can't help but think-- what a terribly disturbing idea for a film! After hearing about this film (which IS mentioned/listed on the Internet Movie Database) my idea/perception of clowns has not been the same.
And I don't think the clowns from Killer Clowns from Outer Space (one of the better movies from the golden era of USA Up-All-Night) or the Insane Clown Posse have helped clowns' image that much either-- all around it just seems like a lot of really bad PR for clowns.
I am seriously creeped out. Once when I was young there was this really scary creepy big guy and he was whistling circus music, I haven't liked clowns ever since. I picture them like whistling that and sharpening their clown knives.
The laughter and ease helping fertility I think I can understand though.
that's hilarious! great post. if that's what it takes for those women, then by God, send in the clowns.
Oh my god! Those baby clowns are HORRID! (and I'm not even scared of clowns)
Did anyone see Master of Champions last night? Princess Elayne, a contortionist, was there with her dad, aka Coco the Clown. Coco is kind of scary even without the makeup!
KC, face paint of any sort is always scary.
Catch, I hope you're joking.
starbender, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
bruce, I need to check that movie out.
perplexio, Funny...I could see Jerry Lewis playing that role quite successfully.
fated, Why a clown? Why don't they play some of Eddie Murphey's RAW on a television screen.
onmywatch, You do that, and you'll see an increase in human/clown babies.
WG, I remember Coco the clown!
I love clowns. :D
My grandma collected them, when she passed away I got her collection, so, each time I look at a clown I think of my grandma.
As for Shlomi, are we sure that the ONLY thing he was doing at their bedside was tricks and humor??? LOL
hahahahahahahahaaaa... you slay me, baby!!!
Seriously, though - laughter is the best medicine for sure :-)
i think there is something to that whole laughter-immunesystem thoery.
but funny funny funny anyway.
By the way, Steven King ruined it for me too with clowns. I have since found them terribly ghoulish.
Coulrophobia is nothing to clown about. Some folks are seriously upset by grotesque clowns.
I have been a clown and in training it was mentioned that we should be aware of peoples fear and let people approach you. Humor is healing and would reduce the stress. The pictures sure surprised me.
at least, now we know what they do in those little cars
quit clownin' round, phoenix! :-)
yeah, IT definitely screwed up my vision of clowns. i don't like them not one bit. i'm just really confused about an adult dressing up in a way that makes them unidentifiable. and they do this for a living???? completely cooky.

Wow...it seems most people here don't like clowns at all. So why do circus shows still have them?
Shlomi has been spreading happiness, and apparently those women like a guy who makes them laugh.
Those clown baby pics are really something!
Funny stuff!
It seems that clowns would make kids NOT want to join the circus.
LMFAO! Clowns freak me out..think clowns, think John Wayne Gacy!
that is so funny. I dislike ronald mcdonald so I feel sorry for that baby ;)
I don't mind clowns at all - in fact I did need one to become pregnant myself. My theory is that the borders between the clown and man are continuing to fade and those two things will end up being the exact same thing.
JD, He's spreading "happiness" alright. Many kids still love clowns, but I think the fear grows as we get older.
michelle, That is so freaky. Just the thought of a John Wayne Gacy clown in some kid's home gives me the chills.
carmel, Poor child will have such HUGE shoes to fill when he gets older. Literally.
nan, Man = clown. 'Nuff said.
Hello Phoenix
I don't really have a preference one way or the other towards clowns. Although some of the pictures you have posted are a bit creepy haha.
You should play the wimbledon suicide pool, it's free and makes the tournament more fun. I would love to go to Wimbledon someday.
This reminds me of my favorite clown joke:
What did one cannibal say to the other cannibal as they ate a clown?
"Does this taste funny to you?"
-- david
clowns are creepy =(
I laugh all the time...I guess I'll be fine :)
Shlomi Algussi? Nothing less scary than a Jewish clown right? Even the name is funny. But I'm sort of a clown so I guess I have increased the fertility of those around me.
The cnibal joke reminded me of one I heard.
Two cannibals are walking down the jungle path. They find a freshly dead body. One looks at the other and says, "I'll start at the top and you start at the bottom."
An hour later the guy on the top calls to the guys on the bottom and says, "Hey, how's it going down there? Having fun?"
The other cannibal, who started at the bottom says, "Oh man, I'm having a ball!"
Ta Dum Dum.
my favorite clown is Krusty
K to the C ha
Now here is a case of supposition being misconstrued as fact. What was really going on is the display of Shlomi's fertility. He's just got some serious tenacious sperm...
I have neen teerrified of clowns ever since my older brother made me watch "It" when i was little! I think they are just bizzarre.
I love reading these comments more than my own posts. You people are so entertaining.
LMAO- i love the pics to go with the article, you are too much!
I think that its all a McDonald's conspiracy.
Laughter is excellent medicine!
