A Father, A Hero
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kim family - especially for James' wife, Kati, and their two daughters: 4 year-old Penelope and 7 month-old Sabine.
James Kim died doing what any father would do for his family.

I had only seen this story in passing via CNN headlines, but didn't know anything about the person. Thank you for the heads-up about the Kims and the recent tragedy. How sad.
How sad.. that poor family and what a couragous man.
I read it and Im crying.
Keshi.
Oh wow that is so sad. I had not heard of this on the news over here, but it sure brings tears to the eyes.
My thoughts and prayers go out to them too and thank you for the links.
RIP Mr Kim. How terrible!
I was very upset when I heard he did not make it. He is a hero.
I didn't know yet--I mean I had been following the story because my cousin's husband actually knows the family. I was elated when the daughters and wife were found relatively okay.
I was going to your links after I posted--but reading some of the comments already let me know the outcome.
That's very sad I saw this last night on the news, just horrible. My thoughts and prayers to their family as well
Phoenix (and anyone else interested), check this out:

Thanks for the link, brianalt. It seems that area is notorious for getting people lost and stranded.
Maybe Oregon will finally put up real signs and make accurate maps.
It is indeed a fascinating and truly sad story. I used to live over in that neck of the words so I can sort of imagine how scared and alone they felt out there. And I also read the reason they may have been on that road is because of the directions from one of online mapping deals like MapQuest.
We had high hopes that he would be found safe, but leaving the car in such frigid temps is not a good idea. Those poor people.
That is so sad. Its so dangerous to travel in a strange area in winter. I just feel so bad thinking about all the things he would have been thinking and feeling as his trek became longer and longer. As a parent, that would be devastating.
It is so terribly sad. I stopped watching the news on it cause it got me too upset.
when i saw this story on the news...i just cried...
but ur right....
he died in a honorable way...exactly what a real father would do. :}
a sad story of the brave partiarch of what is by all accounts a very close and loving family.
This story is so sad. He was a Bay Area guy, too, a local.
Unfortunately, every couple of years a story like this happens in Northern California. Every time the dad (or any one of the group) leaves the family to "get help" they end up not making it. The best bet in those situations is always to stay together in one place.
Another couple was recently lost in the Santa Cruz mountains for five days (and it was near freezing that week) and they both made it out alive by finding shelter and sticking there until help came.

I'm with U here. This is just sooo sad :"(
Imagine, he only went to look for help. Tragic!: (
I've actually been following this a little.... So very sad!!
Such a tragedy, it looks like he will be greatly missed.
This is a sad story. I know he did what he had to do. Some dads out there could really learn from this, even if it did lead to his death. Selfless actions are too rare these days. Families are worth dying for.
This story is so truly sad. What a courageous and loving man to try to save his family in this way.
Oh no.
What a loss for his family, he must have been a good husband and father.
I kept up with this story all along.
I was so shocked when they found his body.
So sad.....
